rescue dog help……?
Hi, We were lucky enough to get a three legged, 9 month, Staffy cross (now known as Meisie) about 4 months ago from Babbington Rescue. She is fantastic and settled in great. She seems to be more like a cat than a dog! We are however, still experiencing the odd problem and wondered if any of you rescuers had any advice.
She was scared of her lead, so we bought her a harness and worked with her to get her to walk infront of us (as she hates the lead being any where near her face/head) she was doing great but recently she has gone a few steps backwards, and is refusing to walk again. i have tried coaxing her with everything you can imagine and Ive tried picking her up and putting her somewhere else. Everyone i have spoken to (dog trainers ets) has said i should drag her even though they say it sounds like an anxiety problem, but this seems wrong and doesnt look great dragging a three legged dog down the street! she definately isnt tired, and is fine when we drive to the country park etc and walk around there (i dont have enough time to do this in the morning) And it can be at any point during the walk so its not that she is scared of something inparticular. what would you advise?
We cannot tell her off as it makes her ill. We hardly ever have to shout at Meisie, but when we do it makes her ill. Its not like we yell, but just a firm ‘NO’ is sometimes enough to put her off her food and makes her sick. I feel awful when this happens but i cant let her get away with everything. Have you experienced this before? any ideas?
Hope you can help…
Hi, thats so brave to take on a rescue, especially a 3 legged one! it makes me so happy that these poor babies are getting loving homes with people like you!
my rescue pomeranian used to do this! then he was fine, and all of a sudden every time he saw the lead he’d go nuts and try to bite my arm off if it went near him!
What i advise you to do is get Meisie used to her lead/harness. It will take a bit of time, but patience is a virtue!! Don’t drag her, you might just frighten her even more! Also, your dog shouldn’t walk in front of you. You want her to walk with you in heal, or behind you. Especially if shes a bit nervous. You need to show her you’re pack leader and everything will be okay.
1. Firstly lay her harness/lead around on the floor in the house so shes used to seeing it and walking near it. Just keep putting it near her when she’s sleeping or near her food bowl etc, keep moving it around so she can;t run away from it but has to get used to it. Build her trust and confidence.
2. Then put it on her in the house and just leave her on with it so she gets used to it and won’t be scared anymore. Practice short sessions everyday. Just put it on her and forget about it, she will eventually too. Gradually increase the time on the lead/harness until she doesn’t mind you putting it on her.
3. When she’s ready, then take her in your garden and hold her and get her to walk again. Teach her to heal by your side. (advice for others, hold the lead high and taught so the dog is tiny bit lifted of its front feet but that they still touch the ground, s/he wont have a choice but to walk I DO NOT ADVISE ANYONE WITH A 3 LEGGED DOG DO THIS!)
4. Then you’re ready for the great outdoors! I’d recommend carrying heaps of training treats in your pocket and praising her when outside. Teach her sit at the road before crossing and come on command. She’ll soon get the hang of it! My pom loves his lead now! Remember, take your time and praise her lots and give her tons of encouragement! She needs you to be the boss!!
Good luck to you and Meisie and let me know how you get on!
