Old School Wrestling: What were your feelings about Wrestlemania first King Kong Bundy's match?
You have to understand that at the time of the first Wrestlemania, they didn’t know that it would become the spectacle it is today (many in the WWE thought that it would only go two years and fail). The storylines heading into Wrestlemania weren’t even championship storylines. Hogan’s big deal with Rock ‘N Wrestling at the time, and therefore there was nothing huge to look forward to, and it was just a big experiment.
Bundy’s character was being portrayed as a superhuman "Goliath" of sorts, and even called for five-counts instead of the traditional three-count. So his squash match was understandable for the time of the event. Bundy went on to become a legend of the ring, so something must have gone right for him.
As a wrestling fan, then… I actually LIKED the way this worked out. I was a fan of bad guys, and Bundy just crushing S.D. Jones was a great push for him in a big show like that (despite S.D. Jones being sort of a jobber by that point).
But even so, wrestlers used to face jobbers all the time back then, with minimal storylines and more playing off of the "competition" which left all the wrestlers as "stars" despite being jobbers. You had this feeling that they weren’t going to win, but at the same time, you never knew when they would. Wrestling, nowadays, is a lot more predictable, and therefore Bundy’s squash was less expected than we’d think of it now…

First WM match I remember with Bundy was WM2 against Hogan in a steel cage. I was much younger so pretty much a mark then, but I thought it was a great and much more compelling than anything in all of wrestling today.

It didn’t last long to have any thoughts of. Should have been longer.
